The Energy and Livelihoods for Communities (ELICO) Foundation is a pioneering renewable energy hub based in East Africa. The foundation’s mission is to accelerate access to modern energy solutions and improve livelihoods through innovation, research, incubation, and demonstration projects. ELICO collaborates with communities, local businesses, and global partners to co-develop sustainable, people-centered clean energy systems.
By empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and smallholder farmers with access to appropriate technologies, technical training, and market linkages, ELICO helps transform rural economies. The foundation’s work contributes to socio-economic growth, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Tasks of the Senior Communications Officer
- As the Senior Communications Officer, you will play a vital role in shaping how ELICO communicates its mission, values, and impact to the public.
- This position offers an opportunity to lead the design and execution of both internal and external communication strategies, ensuring that all messaging reflects the organization’s core purpose—to make renewable energy accessible for all.
- You will also be at the heart of storytelling efforts, crafting narratives that highlight ELICO’s transformative projects and their positive effects on communities throughout East Africa.

Major Tasks
1. Internal and External Communications

Develop, manage, and implement comprehensive communication strategies.

Serve as the main point of contact for media inquiries and public relations.

Ensure consistent, impactful messaging across all channels and platforms.

Oversee updates and maintenance of the ELICO Foundation website and project microsites.
2. Content Creation
-
Write, edit, and produce content for newsletters, press releases, reports, blogs, and digital platforms.

Create compelling human-interest stories that showcase ELICO’s community-driven impact.

Support video and multimedia production for campaigns and events.
3. Media Relations

Build and nurture relationships with journalists, editors, and media houses across East Africa.

Draft and distribute press releases, media kits, and briefings.

Organize press conferences and media visits to project sites.
4. Brand Management

Ensure all communication materials align with ELICO’s brand identity and tone.

Monitor public perception and provide recommendations for brand reputation management.
5. Social Media Strategy and Management

Develop and execute social media campaigns that engage diverse audiences in Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Monitor engagement metrics and analyze performance for continuous improvement.

Stay current with digital trends to enhance visibility and online presence.
6. Event and Campaign Support

Plan and promote organizational events, awareness campaigns, and project launches.

Develop promotional materials such as flyers, banners, and talking points.

Coordinate communication activities before, during, and after events.
7. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

Track communication outcomes and prepare analytical reports on engagement and media reach.

Use insights and data to refine communication approaches and maximize impact.
8. Stakeholder Engagement

Maintain clear communication with donors, partners, stakeholders, and the public.

Prepare briefing notes, talking points, and presentation materials for leadership teams.

Needed Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should bring both creativity and professionalism to your communication approach. The ideal candidate will have:

A bachelor’s degree in mass communication, public relations, journalism, marketing, media studies, English, or a related field.

3–5 years of proven experience in communications, public relations, media management, or digital content creation.
-
Strong writing and editing abilities in both English and Kiswahili.
-
Experience working with NGOs, development organizations, or government communication teams.
-
A good grasp of media relations and experience dealing with journalists and broadcasters.
-
Proficiency in digital tools for content production, including photography, video editing, and social media analytics.

Excellent storytelling, fact-checking, and multitasking skills under tight deadlines.

Creativity, cultural awareness, and strong teamwork skills.
